Just to get the ball rolling….I’ll ask the same question here I asked in class.
Are you/Are you not....the stuff that you own? Are you/Are you not....the people in your life? Are you/Are you not....the things that you do? Are you/Are you not....the choices that you make?
John Donne's poem "No man is an Island" can refer to many things; I believe it refers to who and what we depend on and if we can live with or without dependence on others. as Donne says "each is a piece of the continent" meaning were all a part of something whether it be our family and friends or part of a particular group were all connected to each other in some way. I think there’s been at least one time in everyone’s life where we’ve had to depend on someone or something. I know I depend on material goods most days to help me through the day. Same saying goes for my friends/family I know there’s been at least one time where I’ve had to depend on them to cheer me up, help me or guide me in one way. I do agree that no man is an island, which can mean no one person is the same; we all have that one thing different about us that makes us individuals. If man were islands we’d have no reason to depend on one and another.
John Donne’s quote, “No man is an island” suggests that no one is isolated from another and we are all interconnected. From birth there is an imediate connection with your birthparents and your born into a family tree. In a sense, even if we dont connect with others and isolate ourselves from the community we are still part of a "continent" in one way or another.
‘No mans an island’, John Donne is saying that no one can be exactly like an island. John says this because if a man was an island they would not be connected to anyone in any way.We are also the people in our life because of the huge influence they place on the way we carry out tasks and subsequently why we carry out tasks. our competency and willingness to complete the tasks for people defines who we are both in our own eyes and the eyes of others. In my opinion to Donne’s poem, “Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind involves the connection of death affecting everyone differently which impacts the society at different levels. Affecting every one of us together, by the connection we share.
whats doing phil boy, what you doing tonight brah!? i really like aspect you took and the way you looked deep beyond the poem. You had some very valied points in the way there is always connections with people and thats what influences us to carrfy out our daily life.
yeah whats goin on tim, yeah not doing much not sure about tonite.i really like aspect you took and the way you looked deep beyond the poem. You had some very valied points as well
jiggy, you did really good. when you wrote "I think there’s been at least one time in everyone’s life where we’ve had to depend on someone or something" i think it shows everyone can relate, even when you dont notice it you may have relied on another person, and EVERYONE has relied on their parents at birth.
John Donne’s poem “No man is an Island” I believe can make reference to many things. For one it could be where he says “Entire of itself”, meaning that not one person is made up of just themselves but of their families, friends, hobbies etc. The poem shows that no person can be an island because even if we feel isolated or alone there is always someone there for you to turn to like family and friends. These people are your support network and these are the people that can bring you back to the reality of the situation. No one person can cease to exist on their own because it would just mean that, that person is purposeless and effectively a waste of space. People have to interconnect with one another in order to live a full and enjoyable life. I found the line where John says “Each is a piece of the continent” shows that no one person is an island but that we are each apart of something greater in life and to be a part of the continent means that you are a part of the community, whether it be family , friends or even the school community. I agree that no man is an island but that we are individuals and we’re not the same. We have each had different experiences in life but as interconnecting humans we can offer something to the next persons life.
Jagesh, I liked the way you talked about how we are a part of something whether it’s family, friends or a particular group, that we’re all connected. I believe that this is very true as no one person isn’t involved in something. I also like where you talked about depending on others to help you out when in need of guidance or cheering up. Your family and friends are the two biggest keys to life and without them you would most probably be lost and alone. The last sentence where you talked about if man were islands we’d have no reason to depend on one another is really good.
"No man is an Island", John Donne is making a comparison that islands like people seem to be isolated, but if you look at the big picture we are all connected. No man can exist for themselves because to exist for your self is purposeless it is the presence of others that makes life what it is. But to be dependent is another thing, being independent allows you to think for yourself and form your own opinions which can easily be lost of we become too reliant on those around us .When John says " Each man's death diminishes me" although this is a wonderful concept I do not believe it is entirely true, yes we are connected to a certain extent but sadly people die everyday and the only deaths that truly affect us are those of a people close to us and not of a strangers. For the most part I do agree with Donne’s poem about us needing people around us but I do believe that we do need to be an island at some point in our lives because it provides us with a place to escape the busy lives we lead.
"No man is an Island", when i read this and when thoughts come to my head about this statement 'About a Boy' immediately comes to mid because i think i relates to my thoughts about the statement. I think in the modern world it is true that No man is an Island because i feel it depends heavily on how the world and society has evolved. As shown in About a Boy instead of when being lonely you have no one or no where to go to, now we can just sit down in front of our 42inch LCD tv and watch Avatar or listen to our state of the art Ipod Touch or I phone. I this modern time i do agree that No man is an island because there are always connections that are with us almost like last semester's context the ties that bind there are things that make us us that are there forever. This poem really showcases how No man can be a Island. I also think there is a opposite argument that could be had to this statement.
Samira i thought you put this poem and statement into context brilliantly, you have really touched on the main topics and i really do agree with you when pointing out on some of the lines in this poem which you feel not entirely true. I do agree with this poem overall but i also feel that there is sort of another argument that could be had to debate some of the points made in the story, i thought you summed it up perfectly.
I believe John Donne is saying if we wish to live life to our full potential no man can allow himself to be an island. We depend on people regularly. I believe John Donne is saying no man can ever be an island as we are all connected. Whether we are connected to a small community of our family or friends, it is these communities that make up the whole population, therefore we are all connected. Even if you isolate yourself, others may still be dependant on you. To be literal, John Donne could be saying when he states ‘Each is a piece of the continent’ that we all live on the same planet therefore we are all connected and as a result, no man can ever be an island. When he states ‘Each man's death diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind’ he could be saying that because he isn’t an island and is able to connect with people, he is opening himself up to be able to get hurt from ‘each mans death’. People can choose to be islands, although this lifestyle may not be fulfilling. This is demonstrated in Wills character in ‘About A Boy’ as he chose to be isolated, but when he was exposed to opening up and connecting to others, which was Marcus, he felt emotionally content.
Jagesh I completely agree with you when you said the poem refers to who and what we depend on and if we can live with or without dependence on others. I think you made a good point when you used the example of depending on family, friends and material goods, because I can definitely relate to this, and that we need family and friends to depend on for guidance etc.
" No man is an Island'', In this context I believe John Donne is expressing that no man is considered to be classified as an Island because an island is known to be Isolated and alone. He is making this comparison because no man can be like an island because we are all connected in some sort of way, this can be from either religion, race, family, friends or even hobbies etc. As Donne says '' each is a piece of continent'' he is referring to how people are part of some sort of community or a group or else our life will be purposeless. I believe that when people argue that they are all alone in their life this statement is not considered to be true because everyone has someone in their lives, even if those people have exited your life they are still part of your life from the day they have entered. I believe that even if we see our selfs to be all alone, the people in our lives do influence us to a high extent to be who we are today. So I believe that no one is an Island because to be considered and Island we would have to be literally living on an Isolated Island with no human beings around us.
I totally agree with your statement amanda because we are all connected in some way because this connection does make up the population. I also like how you have added that we depend on some people in our lives regularly for some things. You added some very good points and was very succesfull with summing it up!!! great work.
I agree with Jagesh when he said ' It refers to who and what we depend on and if we can live with or without dependence on others.' I think in one point in our life we need someone to we can depend on and how you have written it makes complete sense and used good examples with family and friends.
My views on John Donne’s poem. “No Man Is an Island” focuses on the point that no man or women can live his or her own life and successfully live a happy and satisfied life. The title "No Man is an Island" and the poem represents that people are always and will connect in some form through the “ties that bind” us together which evidently connect us to at least one other person in our life so no man or women can be isolated from another’s baggage. “ Each is a piece of continent, a part of the main” in my eyes conveys me to believe that no man can be on there own, no man is an island, the extras we carry throughout life can be tracked back to another person and there troubles or beliefs, evidently explained that no man can be an island as shown throughout John Donne’s poem. "No man is an island" can be related to Will in the movie “About A boy”. He once considered himself to be an island, he thought he could live a happy and satisfied life but came to realization no man can be an island, no man can be isolated from society everybody needs and desires the love and affection that people need and deserve.
As many people in the class agree with Jagesh I personally do also as I too believe when you stated "family, friends or a particular group, that we’re all connected." As everybody needs friends and family like Steven has said they are 2 very big key factors in every single persons lives and will always be. Your statement clearly shows that it is not possible a man could ever be referred to as an island, everyone depends on various things in life and family and friends are two main things that keep people going and enable some people to take on the average day to day routine and duties.
In the context, "No man is an island" by John Donne, I believe that he is trying to compare the difference and similarities with people and islands. People say that people are similar to islands because of isolation but they do not see how in some way or another we are all connected. No man is an island because we are never alone. People can chose to be an island and be isolated from everyone but it's not a fulfilling life. 'Each is a piece of the continent' this shows that were all part of something bigger then ourselves. We have our families, friends and the community that we can rely and depend on. In this poem when John states "Each man's death diminishes me, for i am involved in mankind' could mean that he has opened himself up to the people around him and to the world and is able to have that connection to everything and everyone and is able to get hurt from anything. In the movie 'About A Boy', Will considers himself as an island as he thought that he didn't need anyone in his life and later on learnt that no man is an island and that he needs someone else in his life to make him happy. I believe that no man is an island because we all need people in our lives to make it worth living, if we don't we would be alone and miserable.
'No man is an island' in this context, i believe that John Donne is saying that no person is alone, no matter what happens in a persons life there is always going to be other people who are involved who will be and can be affected by the decisions made by an individual. Whether you choose to believe it or not, every action that you take involves others. for example in About A Boy, when Will talks about how he thinks every man is an island at the start of the film, gradually during it, his perception changes as he realizes and comes to find that the actions of Marcus’s mum not only affected herself but also the people around her, friends and family. Putting Will's perception of such a statement 'no man is an island' into question as to whether or not he himself believes it. Whether or not a man can be an island. Can someone really have no one and nothing to be involved with? When I think about the phrase ‘no man is an island’ I link it to isolation, loneliness, and words as such. And I believe that everybody has someone or something that stops them from being an island.
i agree with your statement amanda, i believe that where you've said that whether we know it or not we are all connected to someone, there will always be people who depend on us whether we know it or not. therefore adding to the fact that we've said no man is an island. I like how you've incorpertated will's character into the situation, as he's a perfect example of how people choose to be an island, choose to be isolated, but then people end up depending on you and wanting/needing you therefore backing up your statement that if we choose to be isolated ourselves, there is still other people who are dependent on us
“No man is an Island” this poem explores the idea that no man can be completely isolated to other people. Connection occurs from mainly two different ways mentally and physically and for a man to be completely isolated from society they wouldn’t be living a fulfilled life. There are so many different ways that we are all connected whether it is same beliefs, culture, values, morals, friendship and family. We are interconnected and to be completely isolated a man would have to cut of human nature entirely.
I agree with Sarah ideas and views on the poem “No man is an Island” by John Donne. The poem is exploring the differences and similarities with people and islands. The choices we make by describing ourselves as an island is similar to isolation we may think we feel. Sometimes people don’t understand that we are all connected weather it’s just a friendly hello or the same values we hold as human beings.
" No man is an Island'' this poems perceived meaning is very clear. No man, no woman , no child can gain anything , can grow nor thrive when they are isolated , isolated from family, from peers in general isolated from society. we as people can function, can think can physically do everything without the help of others around us. BUT without those around us can we mentally be motivated, can we be in the right state of mind to accomplish these physical tasks.. in my opinion no. no we can not because there is no motivation nor moral support to mentally achieve anything. Honestly its proving hard to give a personal reflection on this poem SO personally this poem does not appeal to me at all, its uninteresting and plain boring. but the one line "for whom the bell tolls" this was a line that was quite repetitive in my mind as there are many translations of what this may mean. when i read this line i thought of when in John Donne's time as they burried people they had no real medical evidence of telling whether they were really dead or not soo often people would find scratches on the inner lids of coffins because people were dead and clearly trying to break free from their unlucky demise. to solve this problem the, those performing the funeral ceremony would tie a piece of string to the wrist of whom they were burring this piece of string would run all the way to the bell tower. So in the event of someone actually still being alive after being buried they would shake their wrists in order to alert people of the false death and burial. i do agree that no man is an island but definitely as individuals we are completely different from one another so some of us will achieve things in life with or... without people.
steven writes "we are individuals and we’re not the same. We have each had different experiences in life" i found this to be very similar as to how i concluded my reflection he too believes that as individuals we have different experiences.
anyways im lookign at jagesh's conclusion "If man were islands we’d have no reason to depend on one and another" this MAY be true but those people who are island have obviusly made that choice not to depend on another so being an island is fully justified in some cases.
I agree with Lisa's statement saying that we all have someone/something that stopping us from being an island, because people care about us and opposite to an island they don't want us to be lonely. It is common that the choices someone makes revolves around other people and can effect them in a negative or positive way, our actions show who we are but they can also show what the true colours of someone else is.
"No man is an island" as written by John Donne, suggests that, we all in one way or another are part of a community no one is isolated, whether it be our friends or family, "we are all part of a continent". "If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less" which refers to someone losing a friend or family member, which in a way can take away a part of us. In doing so we require a sense of a belonging and friendship to help us. Even if someone likes to think of themselves as an island, they could never actually be one, as we are all involved in a community, in one way or another.
In the video 'powder' a very strong point is suggested by Jeremy, that we are all connected in some sort of way. I did not think this statement was true until we read the short play in class today, where it showed us many people we have not even meet or people that we do not think is a big part of our lives can play such a big role in our lives. Yet this is only to a certain extent, I think that you can only be affected by some one or something that you know of. If you do not know of some one or something how can they influence you and your life?
The poem "No man is an island" written by John Donne suggests that it is not possible for any human being to be an "island"- that is no one can be disconnected or alienated from their surroundings. I personally agree with Donne; that no man is an island or can be an island. The roots from the parts of who we are has come from something we have experienced in the past or currently experiencing now whether it is a person we met, an object we own, a place we explored, the choices we made and so on. For example, intelligence for many originated from the teachers they meet and perhaps the books they own. Anger and insecurity may have originated from a broken family or the people whom they associate with. At times people may feel physically alone and separated from the world, but deep down runs many connections and relations to and from the people we meet, the things we own, the things we do and the choices you make. These aspects are demonstrated in the movie "About a boy" where the main character Will feels like an "island" because he is isolated within his house for the majority of the time with little social connections. However he soon discovers the hidden connections in his life such as his father who was the reason for his musicality and wealth which played a major role towards his physical alienation. Every human being is considered individuals, however it is impossible to be completely isolated with no connections to anything at all. The connections we have make us who we are. So in conclusion, it is true; no man is an island.
The short video clip “Powder” explores how people isolate themselves and others even though we are all still connected. At the beginning of the video Jeremy is walking through the crowd in the carnival, Jeremy appears to be isolated from everyone because they are all staring at him for his different appearance, even though this is negative way of interacting it still is demonstrating that the people are interacting and connecting with him by them recognizing him. Being in that situation would be uncomfortable because strangers stare and judge you on your appearance alone. This would make you feel isolated and disconnected from the community. Although if they didn’t take any notice at all you would feel more isolated and disconnected because your existence would have been disregarded. Jeremy also discusses how generally people have a 'spot' in their mind, which blocks them from thinking past the point of isolation or disconnection. Jeremy discusses how he is able to look past this 'spot', thus he is not afraid when others look at him differently, and because he understands that he is still connected.
I do believe that we are a part of everything. As appearing isolated and disconnected from the crowd Jeremy wasn’t completely isolated and disconnected because they interacted with him by staring at his different appearance. Everyone contributes to each person whether it is talking or smiling or staring. We are all connected and we display that connection by the way we act towards each other.
I think the video ''Powder'' is a very good example of how people judge people of what they look like, because in the video Jeremy who is walking through the crowd of people is being stared at because of his different apperance. Even though Jeremy relises that he is being judged by his apperance he knows that know one is separate even if they think they are because we are all connected in some sort of way. Although Jeremy has a different appearance he knows he is part of this big community of people, he isn't isolated because people do relise him. even though this would make him feel awkard it will also give him the feeling of being relised for being different which I believe is a benefit for him because his not like everyone else, he is unique in his own way
The video "Powder" is a good example of exploring identity and belonging because it shows someone as an outcast within the community. Jeremy is different because of the way he looks on the outside. Our first impressions of him are, he keeps to himself, doesn't want to be noticed because he is wearing dark glasses and a hat and he "looks" different from everyone else because of his albino appearance. Jeremy goes on to explain that everyone who was staring at him is connected to each other. They just don't know it yet because they judge Jeremy by what he looks like on the outside not by whats inside. As Jeremy is explaining this to his friend who doesn't believe him, Jeremey shows that everyone is connected by putting their hands together getting his friend to feel Jeremy's heart beat and vise versa. This reinforces Jeremy's statement that eveyone is connected in some way.
The video "Powder" is a good example of people feeling isolated. Jeremy is at the carnival, walking around when people start staring at him because he looks different from anyone else. This makes him feel isolated from everyone in the community. They are judging his looks without knowing who he is as a person and thats more important then his looks. Jeremy explains to his friend that he is being judged because of his looks. He talks about people having a 'spot' in their mind which makes people think and feel the disconnection from people and also isolation. On this note, he is able to look past it and realise that were all connected in some way, Jeremy shows that they are all connected some way by putting their hands together and feeling each others heart beat.
i agree with Tijana when you said, "As appearing isolated and disconnected from the crowd Jeremy wasn’t completely isolated and disconnected because they interacted with him by staring at his different appearance. Everyone contributes to each person whether it is talking or smiling or staring. We are all connected and we display that connection by the way we act towards each other." This is true and you made a very good point. Good work
The movie clip “Powder”, I believe is a great example of identity and belonging as it shows the perspective of the outsider in the community. From the moment we see Jeremy we can tell he’s different due to his Albino appearance. This causes all the people around him to stop and stare at him just because he looks different, or that he’s not normal like everyone else there. The way he talks and presents himself is also quite interesting. He seems like a mysterious character due to him wearing a hat, and dark shaded sunglasses which further enhance his appearance as an outsider. Where Jeremy says that “Inside most people, there’s a feeling of being separate, separated from everything, when their not, they’re apart of absolutely everyone and everything.” I believe that this is most probably the key quote of the whole clip due to the truth that is behind the statement. Most people do have an element separation from others but that’s just a natural part of life. But the truth is that we are in a way apart of absolutely everyone and everything as we all live on the same planet and are a part of the global community. There is also another point that is made, the way we are all interconnected in some manner. Also the ability to talk to people without lies or in some way deceiving them is another key point made in this clip. Without lies and deception we are able to see the true qualities of human beings.
Sarah, I like the points that you made in regards to the way Jeremy is judged by those around him. The way he is judged just because of his looks is quite harsh but that happens almost every day in the community. Also I liked the point that you made on the interconnection between Jeremy and his friend. The way they both touched hands and felt each other’s heart beat was symbolic and also validated Jeremy’s statement.
jeremy just gave a complete definition of what it means to be part of something, what it means to be so close yet soo far away and detached at the same time as he speaks of those that stare at him. jeremy the albino character is a part of all those who considers him different and who consider there to be something wrong with him. BUT because he is considered to be soo different he is in this way very far from them. This video can relate to the movie :about a boy" because of the character Will. At the start of the movie will his own little island, isolated from people and has a small experience with people outside his house, will then sees a dormant connection with his farther who could be to blame for wills past isolation. in this case the character jeremy expierences a connection with the female character with whim he seeks inner consolidation and comfert.
In the short clip 'Powder; your part of absolutely everyone and everything' In my opinion, when the girl was laughing at Jeremy when he was telling her what he believed I thought she wasn’t really understanding what he meant, and didn’t really want to hear what he had to say. She made comments about how she is connected to a man in a boat in Italy in a sea she’s never heard of before, and it got me to think about something I had read about how we really aren’t an island and how we are connected to everybody even if its in the form of being in the background of a random person’s photo. We’ll be in that photo forever, we’ve connected. i believe this clip really explores the themes in no man is an island; isolation and connectivity without actually physically connecting. At the start of the clip it showed Jeremy walking through the carnival by himself, and there was people all looking at him strangely just because of the way he looked. It really points out and demonstrates that people do judge a book by its cover. Even though Jeremy didn’t connect physically with the people he walked past, there was still a connection between the strangers and him because then people were obviously looking, staring and talking about him. Making a connection with him because he would know that there are people staring at him. Therefore proving that no man is an island whether it be for positive or negative reasons.
Identity and belonging and the point, no man is an island is once again demonstrated in the short video film, "Powder" in the eyes and opinions of Jeremy. Jeremy appears to be different as shown when he walks through the carnival and everyone he walked passed was looking at him which gave him the feeling of being different or an outcast. Jeremy explains how everybody is connected in some way, shown when Jeremy insisted touching hands with the lady friend next to him which proved his point of everybody being connected as she felt instantly connected to Jeremy. The person who seemed the most isolated than the next in Jeremy and can also be related to Marcus in "About a Boy." Jeremy's physical appearance and Marcus the boy who was bullied shows that an island is something near impossible to be as the slightest touch of two hands or the friendship with an older man automatically shows connection with two people and eliminates the chance of being an island. If two of the people who appear to be most different can find the point of no man is an island everyone is connected, the theory of no man stands alone is proven, a connection of any form is a type of communication, breaking the barrier of isolation and difference.
Sarah, I like and agree with the points you that you made to the way Jeremy got judged by the people around him who didn’t even know him. But judged him just on his looks. Without a single word being exchanged by either of them. I also agreed with the point you made about how Jeremy and his friend touched hands and they felt each others heart beat. I was a symbolic moment in the clip and it pretty much summarised Jeremy’s statement
Tijana is correct as she stated "As appearing isolated and disconnected from the crowd Jeremy wasn’t completely isolated and disconnected because they interacted with him by staring at his different appearance.” Despite the fact people were staring and Jeremy as he appeared different they were still making a form of connection as they were intrigued as they wanted to know what was wrong with him or how and why he looked the way he did, people wanting to know what was wrong with him is still proving the point no man is an island as they were making a form of connection with Jeremy.
After watching the clip from the movie ‘Powder’ I felt immense sympathy and appreciation for Jeremy. He has such a positive outlook on his life even though in others eyes, he isn’t as fortunate. He is getting judged by everyone which is evident in the way that everyone looks at him as he walks. He stated that, “You’re part of absolutely everyone and everything”. Even though he is an individual with the way he looks and the way he is treated, that statement explains that even though he looks like he is isolated, he feels connected – a sense of belonging. This ties in with ‘No Man Is an Island’ which is a statement he would strongly agree with.
Jeremy saying that statement shows that even though we all have individual differences, we all live on the same Earth and we’re all people. We’re all individuals, but we’re also connected and a group. I disagree with a part of his statement about being part of ‘everything’, but agree with being a part of ‘everyone’. I don’t feel as though I’m connected to an animal living in Africa to be honest, although it is interesting to think about.
People stop and stare at Jeremy as he walks, but being different is a quality many people want and no one can really achieve. The people that we classify as different are the people that we remember. You are more likely to remember someone who stands out, then someone who blends in. So in that way, being a complete individual is beneficial. Also, it is very ironic that Jeremy is made out to be the one who is isolated, yet he believes that we’re all connected.
This poem focuses on the idea that none of us can happily live our lives unless we're involved with other people. Without human contact and multiple relationships, it can be argued that our lives lack fulfillment and reason. As human beings we require not only to feel wanted, but also to feel needed. It is expected that most people have at least one person in their life that they can rely on, and whom also relies on them. Whether it is a family member or a friend, having someone to support you, both through difficult and stressful times can make life that much easier. However, it must be mentioned that we cannot survive merely relying on everybody around us and must be capable of being independent. The ability to look after ones self is vital in life, not only to survive, but also to feel a certain amount of self worth. We need to feel that we deserve our family and friends, and that we are valuable contributors to our relationships. My personal opinion is that life would not be worth living without human interaction and contact. It would lack depth and meaning without friends, family and responsibility. This said, we still need to be our own person and look out for ourselves, because ultimately, it is our individuality that truly defines us.
the powder video was touching. i could relate to Jeremy saying "everyone is apart of everything". John and jeremy have to different point of views on the world, but so does everyone else. i could see the world looking through the poem's point of view and jeremy's quote. i found that the lady in the powder video had a different opinion to jeremy's. that was shown by he laughing to his quote (that i picked out) even thou the rest of the world didn't pay much appreciation to jeremy with his skin colour, he still saw it as other people should, and by him talking about the world/universe like that means that hes still living his life to the full. just like going to a fair (in the video) even thou everyone was looking at him, and by what it seems a lady friend.
Powder powder demonstrates that no matter how different one person might be we are all connected. At the beginning of the clip Jeremy is immediately seen as different from everyone else. He is judged for what is on the outside. Jeremy goes on to say that everyone is connected, even though Jeremy is the one who seems isolated from everyone. He is stating the no one is disconnected or separated even if the believe they are. Although Jeremy seems separate he still believes that everyone is a part of everything and everyone. This text relates to John Donne’s No man is an island as both texts are stating that everyone is connected, no matter how different you are.
Just to get the ball rolling….I’ll ask the same question here I asked in class.
ReplyDeleteAre you/Are you not....the stuff that you own?
Are you/Are you not....the people in your life?
Are you/Are you not....the things that you do?
Are you/Are you not....the choices that you make?
What do you think??

ReplyDeleteJohn Donne’s quote, “No man is an island” suggests that no one is isolated from another and we are all interconnected. From birth there is an imediate connection with your birthparents and your born into a family tree. In a sense, even if we dont connect with others and isolate ourselves from the community we are still part of a "continent" in one way or another.

ReplyDelete‘No mans an island’, John Donne is saying that no one can be exactly like an island.
ReplyDeleteyeah whats goin on tim, yeah not doing much not sure about tonite.i really like aspect you took and the way you looked deep beyond the poem. You had some very valied points as well
ReplyDeletejiggy, you did really good. when you wrote "I think there’s been at least one time in everyone’s life where we’ve had to depend on someone or something" i think it shows everyone can relate, even when you dont notice it you may have relied on another person, and EVERYONE has relied on their parents at birth.
ReplyDeleteJohn Donne’s poem “No man is an Island” I believe can make reference to many things.
ReplyDeleteI found the line where John says “Each is a piece of the continent” shows that no one person is an island but that we are each apart of something greater in life and to be a part of the continent means that you are a part of the community, whether it be family , friends or even the school community.
ReplyDelete"No man is an Island", John Donne is making a comparison that islands like people seem to be isolated, but if you look at the big picture we are all connected.
ReplyDeleteFor the most part I do agree with Donne’s poem about us needing people around us but I do believe that we do need to be an island at some point in our lives because it provides us with a place to escape the busy lives we lead.
ReplyDeleteSamira i thought you put this poem and statement into context brilliantly, you have really touched on the main topics and i really do agree with you when pointing out on some of the lines in this poem which you feel not entirely true. I do agree with this poem overall but i also feel that there is sort of another argument that could be had to debate some of the points made in the story, i thought you summed it up perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI believe John Donne is saying if we wish to live life to our full potential no man can allow himself to be an island.
ReplyDeleteJagesh
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you when you said the poem refers to who and what we depend on and if we can live with or without dependence on others.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your statement amanda because we are all connected in some way because this connection does make up the population. I also like how you have added that we depend on some people in our lives regularly for some things. You added some very good points and was very succesfull with summing it up!!! great work.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jagesh when he said ' It refers to who and what we depend on and if we can live with or without dependence on others.' I think in one point in our life we need someone to we can depend on and how you have written it makes complete sense and used good examples with family and friends.
ReplyDeleteMy views on John Donne’s poem.
ReplyDeleteAs many people in the class agree with Jagesh I personally do also as I too believe when you stated "family, friends or a particular group, that we’re all connected." As everybody needs friends and family like Steven has said they are 2 very big key factors in every single persons lives and will always be. Your statement clearly shows that it is not possible a man could ever be referred to as an island, everyone depends on various things in life and family and friends are two main things that keep people going and enable some people to take on the average day to day routine and duties.
ReplyDeleteIn the context, "No man is an island" by John Donne, I believe that he is trying to compare the difference and similarities with people and islands.
ReplyDeleteI believe that no man is an island because we all need people in our lives to make it worth living, if we don't we would be alone and miserable.
ReplyDeletei agree with your statement amanda, i believe that where you've said that whether we know it or not we are all connected to someone, there will always be people who depend on us whether we know it or not. therefore adding to the fact that we've said no man is an island. I like how you've incorpertated will's character into the situation, as he's a perfect example of how people choose to be an island, choose to be isolated, but then people end up depending on you and wanting/needing you therefore backing up your statement that if we choose to be isolated ourselves, there is still other people who are dependent on us
ReplyDelete“No man is an Island” this poem explores the idea that no man can be completely isolated to other people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sarah ideas and views on the poem “No man is an Island” by John Donne. The poem is exploring the differences and similarities with people and islands. The choices we make by describing ourselves as an island is similar to isolation we may think we feel. Sometimes people don’t understand that we are all connected weather it’s just a friendly hello or the same values we hold as human beings.
ReplyDelete" No man is an Island'' this poems perceived meaning is very clear.
ReplyDeletei do agree that no man is an island but definitely as individuals we are completely different from one another so some of us will achieve things in life with or... without people.
steven writes "we are individuals and we’re not the same. We have each had different experiences in life" i found this to be very similar as to how i concluded my reflection he too believes that as individuals we have different experiences.
ReplyDeleteanyways im lookign at jagesh's conclusion "If man were islands we’d have no reason to depend on one and another" this MAY be true but those people who are island have obviusly made that choice not to depend on another so being an island is fully justified in some cases.
ReplyDelete"No man is an island" as written by John Donne, suggests that, we all in one way or another are part of a community no one is isolated, whether it be our friends or family, "we are all part of a continent".
ReplyDeleteI agree with
In the video 'powder' a very strong point is suggested by Jeremy, that we are all connected in some sort of way.
ReplyDeleteThe poem "No man is an island" written by John Donne suggests that it is not possible for any human being to be an "island"- that is no one can be disconnected or alienated from their surroundings.
ReplyDeleteI personally agree with Donne; that no man is an island or can be an island.
ReplyDeleteAt the beginning of the video Jeremy is walking through the crowd in the carnival, Jeremy appears to be isolated from everyone because they are all staring at him for his different appearance, even though this is negative way of interacting it still is demonstrating that the people are interacting and connecting with him by them recognizing him.
Although Jeremy has a different appearance he knows he is part of this big community of people, he isn't isolated because people do relise him. even though this would make him feel awkard it will also give him the feeling of being relised for being different which I believe is a benefit for him because his not like everyone else, he is unique in his own way
ReplyDeleteThe video "Powder" is a good example of exploring identity and belonging because it shows someone as an outcast within the community.
ReplyDeleteThe video "Powder" is a good example of people feeling isolated.
ReplyDeletei agree with Tijana when you said, "As appearing isolated and disconnected from the crowd Jeremy wasn’t completely isolated and disconnected because they interacted with him by staring at his different appearance. Everyone contributes to each person whether it is talking or smiling or staring. We are all connected and we display that connection by the way we act towards each other."
ReplyDeleteThis is true and you made a very good point. Good work
The movie clip “Powder”, I believe is a great example of identity and belonging as it shows the perspective of the outsider in the community.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I like the points that you made in regards to the way Jeremy is judged by those around him. The way he is judged just because of his looks is quite harsh but that happens almost every day in the community. Also I liked the point that you made on the interconnection between Jeremy and his friend. The way they both touched hands and felt each other’s heart beat was symbolic and also validated Jeremy’s statement.
ReplyDeletejeremy just gave a complete definition of what it means to be part of something, what it means to be so close yet soo far away and detached at the same time as he speaks of those that stare at him. jeremy the albino character is a part of all those who considers him different and who consider there to be something wrong with him.
ReplyDeleteIn the short clip 'Powder; your part of absolutely everyone and everything' In my opinion, when the girl was laughing at Jeremy when he was telling her what he believed I thought she wasn’t really understanding what he meant, and didn’t really want to hear what he had to say.
ReplyDeleteEven though Jeremy didn’t connect physically with the people he walked past, there was still a connection between the strangers and him because then people were obviously looking, staring and talking about him.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I like and agree with the points you that you made to the way Jeremy got judged by the people around him who didn’t even know him. But judged him just on his looks. Without a single word being exchanged by either of them. I also agreed with the point you made about how Jeremy and his friend touched hands and they felt each others heart beat. I was a symbolic moment in the clip and it pretty much summarised Jeremy’s statement
ReplyDeleteTijana is correct as she stated "As appearing isolated and disconnected from the crowd Jeremy wasn’t completely isolated and disconnected because they interacted with him by staring at his different appearance.” Despite the fact people were staring and Jeremy as he appeared different they were still making a form of connection as they were intrigued as they wanted to know what was wrong with him or how and why he looked the way he did, people wanting to know what was wrong with him is still proving the point no man is an island as they were making a form of connection with Jeremy.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the clip from the movie ‘Powder’ I felt immense sympathy and appreciation for Jeremy.
ReplyDeleteJeremy saying that statement shows that even though we all have individual differences, we all live on the same Earth and we’re all people.
ReplyDeletethe powder video was touching. i could relate to Jeremy saying "everyone is apart of everything".
ReplyDeletePowder
ReplyDeletepowder demonstrates that no matter how different one person might be we are all connected.
