My intention for the SAC in term four, week one is to write the essay in persuasive form and in third person. I will use the prompt, “To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement,” I will be agreeing with this statement and aiming for an audience of people my own age and of similar ages because I think that they will be able to relate more to the particular prompt as well as the language used. I will use persuasive language and techniques in the essay such as rebuttal and rhetorical questions. And I plan to incorporate and draw on examples from some films we have looked at in class such as the class text, “About A Boy,” and “Hey Hey, it’s Esther Blueburger” as well as to try to use examples from the real world that aren’t necessarily stereotyped to such extremes like the examples in some films. My contention is that, it is a great achievement to be yourself despite the pressure to conform. This does touch on the other prompt as well but it all comes under the same topic. I’m going to discuss the difficulties as well as the consequences of choosing to be yourself rather than to conform because going against the crowd can be hard in some cases and even leave people isolated from others who don’t choose to accept their individuality.
For the SAC in term four, I will be choosing the prompt “conformity destroys individuality”. I agree with this prompt, and I think that it’s appropriate for me to write about, as there is a lot that can be discussed. I will be drawing from both contexts “identity and belonging” and the film “About a Boy” in that they all convey the same idea of living up to the expectations of others and how doing so, leads to isolation and enables other people to perceive someone as “different” in their eyes. I will explore the themes of loneliness, isolation and individuality and how there are positives and negatives to both sides, in the form of an expository essay. I will attempt to use complex language to persuade readers that yes, conformity does destroy individuality, and I target this at a more mature audience, as I find that they have a better understanding of the general society and approach issues with more maturity than those of the younger generation. My contention will be something similar to the idea that as we base our lives around the perceptions of others, we change who we are, so that we can become someone that we’re not.
Week 1 – Term 4 - Expository / Persuasive Writing Response.. The prompt i have chose to write an persuasive essay on is the 2nd one ‘To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement.’ I agree with this statement. The target audience for essay is people in and around my age group. I will structure this essay using TEEL. It will consist of an intro, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. I plan to use the following ideas for my three body paragraphs: - Evidence - ideas from the movie ‘Hey Hey it’s Ester Blueberger’ and from ‘ About A Boy’ - Emotional Appeal - ideas from the movie ‘Hey Hey it’s Ester Blueberger’ and the context ‘Identity and Belonging’ - Comparision - compare the characters in ‘Hey Hey it’s Ester Blueberger’ and ‘About A Boy’ The contention for my persuasive essay is. . It is a massive achievement to be able to accept who you are in world that you may not fit into.
Week 1 Term 4 Sac. The prompt that I am going to write about is 'To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement'. i totally agree with this statement, to be true to yourself is to be who you are and not what you believe, as in about a boy Marcus is confronted everyday to be somebody different, and not who he really is. The target audience for my essay will be teenage years, as in 'Hey Hey its Ester Blueberger' as she hides her own identity for the sacrifice of belonging. I will be drawing on the ideas from the context "identity and Belonging" and the class text, the film "About a boy" as Marcus and will are helping each other find their own identities. Through their personalities Marcus helps Will grow up. I am going to persuade the readers that being yourself is a great thing and nothing not even for the sacrifice of belonging, should stop you being you.
week 1 term 4 sac. the prompt i will be writing about is "to achieve conformity is not achieving anything at all" i agree with this statement.I plan to target this at teenagers. In my paragraphs i plan to reference "Hey hey its Ester Blueberger" though a young teenage girl searching for her place in the world but gets lost and caught up in what everyone else wants her to be and achieves nothing by acting that way. "Mean Girls" shows how peer pressure can influence one to be a person and dont understand or know. They are no longer themselves with no sense of identity with no goals to achieve. and finally "Angus, thongs and perfect snogging" a movie that explores how a teenage girl is out to impress everyone but in order changes herself becoming unhappy in the person she conformed to.
Im going to persuade the reader that you can not achieve anything with out first being yourself.
Week 1 term 4 sac The prompt that I have chosen to write about for this essay is "conformity destroys individuality" and I am agreeing with this statement. The audience that I will be writing for is mainly teenagers who can relate to the struggles of conformity and individuality throughout their secondary schooling years. I will write this essay as a persuasive piece, drawing examples from the films "About a Boy" and “Hey Hey, it’s Esther Blueburger" and using persuasive techniques such as rhetorical questions and inclusive language. My aim is to persuade the reader that conformity does destroy individuality, as it encourages teenagers to follow the crowd instead of working to become an individual with their own morals and goals.
For the SAC in term four I intend to write about the prompt “Conformity destroys Individuality”. It will be written in the form of an expository essay. I will bring forth ideas that will widen a person’s view on the topic by showing both sides of the argument and not taking a direct stand on whether conformity destroys individuality or not. I will use a calm informative tone to target a teenage audience as most of the evidence and points made are related to the high school years.
My first paragraph will involve answering the question. “What exactly is conformity?” and the different things people have to conform to that could allow the loss of individuality. The second paragraph will involve showing that in an attempt to conform to society; you will lose a part of your individuality. The final paragraph will demonstrate that certain conformities in society develop our individuality. As evidence I will be looking at the theme of “Identity and belonging” and drawing evidence from the movies “Hey Hey it’s Ester Blueberger” and “About a Boy”.
For the sac in week 1 term 4 I will be writing an expository essay on the prompt “conformity destroys individuality”. I will be agreeing with this prompt and I will be appealing to all teenagers because at our current age, we want to fit in and make friends. As evidence for this point of view, I will be drawing on movies “about a boy”, “hey hey, its esther blueburger”. This will show a contrast between people conforming, where Marcus is keen not to change the way he behaves in order to make friends, where as Esther conforms in order to make friends, but in the process, changes her whole character. My aim in this article will be too convince my target audience that individuality is highly important in teenagers and is key in discovering who you are as a person. I plan to use persuasive techniques such as evidence and facts/figures.
I have chosen the prompt "Conformity destroys individuality." I will be writhing this peice in the form of an expository essay. I am agreeing with this prompt and will attempt to explain the ways in which conforming to something, someone, ect, destroys the individuality of that person. In my paragraphs, I will be using examples from the concept of "Identity and belonging", explaining what conformity is, and how someones identity helps them to stay true to themselves. I will also be drawing on a real life situation of conforming, and how it results in a temporary loss of individuality. For my final paragraph I would relate to the movie studied in class "About a boy". I will explain how marcus not conforming and staying true to himself results in an obvious individual character, and how other characters such as the boys he is bullied by, all conform to eachother, hence lose their individual qualities.
In my Expository Essay on the prompt 'Conformity destroys individuality' I am taking an informative approach aimed at peers and other people my age at risk of loosing their individuality and giving into conformity. During my essay i will try and make my audience see that you dont need to try and be someone else in order to fit in and that the world would be a very boring place if individuality didnt exist. I will use the short clip on Powder to bring my point across as the clearly different character didn't care that he was different, he knew who he was and had no intention to conform.
I am doing the topic ‘Conformity destroys individuality’. I chose to do a persuasive writing response because I am more confortable with informal language and I want my essay to flow. I am going to write in third person, so that there is a view of all angles. I am going to be using examples from a range of different texts and videos such as Mean Girls, The Outsiders, Powder and About a Boy. Based on the idea that a persons individuality is destroyed by conformity, I’m going to use the example of Marcus and Will, and how Will tries to conform Marcus by giving him rap music, thinking he would be happier if he was like everyone else. I hope to use a few rhetorical questions and evidence to strengthen my points.
In my expository essay on the prompt to be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement. I will be exploring the themes of individuality and belonging through the text of About a Boy, identity through the text of hey hey it’s Esther Blueburger and the concept of changing into something that your not for the people around you. I will use formal language and will be to the audience of friends and family. Being an individual and yourself then the world is trying to change you into something your not is a credit to yourself.
For the creating and presenting sac, in the first week of term four I have chosen the prompt "Conformity destroys individuality", and will be in the form of an expository essay. The audience I will be relating this to will be to young teenagers who will be experiencing the group/peer pressures at school on a daily basis, and to convey to them that they shouldn’t be followers, but instead should be their own leaders. Throughout my essay I will be drawing examples from the films "About a Boy" and “Hey Hey, it’s Esther Blueburger" and using these examples in attempt to show that at the end of the day we need to stay true to ourselves, and to be ourselves, instead of following in others footsteps, because in the end that’s not what truly makes us who we are. We usually conform because there are certain accepted standards about how a person should behave in certain situations, but at the end of the day we have to recognize that by conforming to others, will destroy our individuality and turn us into something we are not.
For the SAC this week, I have chosen to write an expository response to the topic: "To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement". I believe this statement is very true and I will discuss how being apart of a culture or religion can give you greater challenges in life by avoiding peer group pressure and being true to yourself. I will show this from personal experience of my culture/religion.
The targeted audience would be for teenagers because I believe this would be the best suited audience for me to write about being a teenager myself. Some of the audience may experience a personal impact when reading my essay because being from the same age group, may inspire, and motivate them to be true to their self.
Additional evidence to back up my point will be to draw on examples from “About A Boy,” and “Hey Hey, it’s Esther Blue burger”. Esther Blue burger becomes captured into peer group pressure when she wants to feel accepted in society. This causes her to do things that are irresponsible and just not her. She later finds out being true to herself was better then following apart of the crowd.
The people in the popular group say there is no peer pressure because they are at the top of the food chain. Really what they are doing is just eating away at everybody else. ~ Lauren Greenfield
Identity and Belonging will be the context of my persuasive essay. The prompt I have chosen to write this essay on is ‘To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement.’ This essay should make the reader agree with me that being able to accept yourself and who you really are in an environment that you may not fit in is a huge achievement. ‘It’s a massive achievement to be able to accept who you are in a world that you may not fit into,’ is the contention of my persuasive essay. My target audience for my persuasive piece is for people in and around my age group who may have a bit a problem fitting into their environment. I will use TEEL to structure my essay. It will have one introduction, three body paragraphs and one conclusion. My introduction will consist of a personal experience of me thinking that I didn’t fit into my school environment when I was young in my early years of school. Eventually though I soon realised we were different and none of us are the same. I will also state the persuasive techniques that which are evidence, emotional appeal and comparision. It will also mention the prompt and contention. This paragraph will be written in 1st person. In my body paragraphs the evidence I will use to support my techniques I’m using and my contention will come from the movies ‘About A Boy’and ‘Hey Hey It’s Ester Blueberger’. This paragraph will be written 3rd person.
for the first SAC in term four I will choose to explore "conformity destroys individuality" through the contention of "individually we choose what we conform to". Persuasively I will use TEEL to structure a first person peice. I will use a non confronting tone, but rather employing techniques to make the reader think about their current stance on the topic. i will use a lot of rethorical questions. My target audience is those who dont know where they are heading. are they the conformists or the individuals? my intro will be an insight into how mature aged people deal with situations where they have to choose to conform or rebel. and the following paragraphs will detail different situations that they have to decide. I will use the mother from "About a Boy" (forgive the lack of name, ive just had a mental blank) as an example. though she has differences she has learned that maybe conforming is possibly the right thing for her son.
The short clip on ‘Powder’ demonstrates the exclusion of the character Jeremy from society. Although it is a different kind of isolation and alienation from what is shown in ‘About a Boy’ where Will isolates himself, Jeremy brings up the interesting point that 'there’s a feeling of being separate, separated from everything', and that 'they are apart of absolutely everyone and everything' this is saying that being an Island is only a feeling and proves that you can’t completely isolated and everyone’s is a part of everything and something that happens can affect everyone just indirectly.
John Donne in the poem `No Man Is An Island’ demonstrates the connection that all humans hold between one another. In his first 4 lines; 1. No man is an island, 2. Entire of itself. 3. Each is a piece of the continent, 4. A part of the main. he compares all living people to a country and continent. Then, in the next 5 lines; 5. If a clod be washed away by the sea, 6. Europe is the less. 7. As well as if a promontary were. 8. As well as if a manner of thine own 9. Or of thine friend’s were. he explains and describes the effects that occur on the entire continent when a single piece/country washes away, regardless of its size or importance. In our modern day and age many believe that being an island is possible and maybe even normal because of technology and fancy equipment ect. In actual fact though, these people are still part of a community, like a country is to a continent, and that whether or not that country/person has little communication, cooperation or even any similarities with their community/continent there absence will still make an impact. Humans no longer have to soley rely on others. Though some choose not to participate or be as involved with todays society but being completely alone or being an island is not possible as we can not soley rely on ourselfs.
Statement of Intention: For our SAC on Thursday the 6th of October, i will be exploring the prompt “conformity destroys identity.” I will do so in a different view though as i will be twisting this prompt into what i believe, which is that “conformity helps shape a persons identity.” I will use evidence from both “About a Boy” and the context “Identity and Belonging” as well as from my only personal experiences, focusing on the recent passing away of a beloved Cheltenham Baseball Club memeber and also a coach who has taught me so much of what i know. This tragedy affected the whole club and community and I know first hand that being a part of this club, and being coached by Kevin Williams has shaped me and my identity. I will write this in the form of an expository essay and it will be written in first-person so i can create a deeper connection with the reader.
"To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement."
In composing this piece of writing I am inspired to try and convince the audience about my point of view and give them some insight into how not conforming to what everyone else is doing such as the latest trends will really feel like a great achievement and fulfill life hapiness. I will be exploring the theme of ‘Identity & Belonging’ as it too is demonstrated througout the current text ‘About a Boy’.
This piece of writing is to be written for the school magazine aswell as students and teachers that are interested in the topic and text. I’m writing this essay as an expository essay. Three paragraphs consisting of examples specifically from ‘About a Boy’ and how they relate to the theme "To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement."
I’ll focus on Marcus as he is the main character and how him being ‘different’ affects his schooling and why people at is school dont seem to like him. Because of the way Marcus has been brought up by his somewhat eccentric mother Fiona, he has never really conformed because he is trying to please his mother more than anyone. He is a much happier person by the end of the film. I will not be using over formal language as it is directed mainly at the younger audience of the school, and fancy language may not make alot of sense. Although I will use a mix of formal & informal language.

For our SAC on Thursday the 6th of October, i will be exploring the prompt “conformity destroys identity.” I will do so in a different view though as i will be twisting this prompt into what i believe, which is that “conformity helps shape a persons identity.” I will use evidence from both “About a Boy” and the context “Identity and Belonging” as well as from my only personal experiences, focusing on the recent passing away of a beloved Cheltenham Baseball Club memeber and also a coach who has taught me so much of what i know. This tragedy affected the whole club and community and I know first hand that being a part of this club, and being coached by Kevin Williams has shaped me and my identity. I will write this in the form of an expository essay and it will be written in first-person so i can create a deeper connection with the reader.
Statement of Explanation
ReplyDelete"To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement."
