*excuse this late post as i didnt have access to the video in time* In regard to Powder i can really relate to this, because i also do believe that when the character quotes about everyone has a feeling of a sort of isolation. Even if you are a person who is very social and not normally an island there is always times in your life where you feel you are the only person tht can deal with the type of person you are, just like the charcter in the movie, he shows that he feels isolated due to his look. There is always a feeling of isolation in a person sometimes in life.
My intention of the following essay in week 1 of term 4 is to write a persuasive piece in third person responding to "Conformity destroys individuality" and i will be disagreeing with the statement using persuasive language to communicate my belief on this matter. My audience will really be for anyone pretty much over the age of 15 as it is a very general and wide topic that most people can understand and relate to. I will try to use alot of examples in the real world that people can contrast my point of view to some one else's. This may including things like AFL Football teams and all the different characters there are in a team like that. I will use 'About a Boy" to explain my contention as it fits very well with the argument.
For the SAC I have chosen to write a persuasive piece on prompt A “To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make something else is a great achievement.” I am agreeing on this statement as we see the difficulties and consequences of being “different” in everyday life. The tone I will be using is informal and my intended audience will be the general audience as this is a topic that affects many people of different age and sex. My contention will be, you should always be true to yourself and own identity even though its easier to be conformed.
for the SAC that we shall be doing on the first week back i am going to write an expository essay responding to the topic " to be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement" i will be exploring this topic using my opinion on this topic and exploring key ideas and themes that may lead to why we may feel that we must conform to others and why we may break away and do what we feel is right what we feel is true. My audience will be my peers those who feel that by doing their own thing they are different (...they are wrong) i will use examples from anywhere that i can find, movies, people, quotes , my own life experiences. I shall relate to the movie about a boy by discussing why some characters may feel different and know that they but they do their own thing anyway beyond what anyone else says or thinks of them. I am very strong minded about this topic as i feel that people should be able to act and behave how they please without being judged or looked upon as being different by other people. Everyone expresses themselves in very different ways , it is the sad reality that a lot of these ways may not be accepted by some people and society so they may conform to a common way of expression or thinking.
for my english SAC I will be writing an essay on the prompt "conformity destroys individuality". I'm still not sure wether to make it an expository or persausive essay though. I will be drawing examples for my topic from our class text "About a Boy" where Marcus goes against conformity and sticks to being an individually because it makes him happy. examples of other film texts will be used to highlight the push to be a nonconformist. Song lyrics might also be used to look at the differences between conformists and individuality. My audience wil be my teachers and peers which makes this a formal piece of writing.
For the SAC I will be writing an expository essay on prompt B : “Conformity destroys individuality”. I will be drawing on the examples of “Identity and Belonging” and the film “About a Boy”. I will explore the key themes of both texts. From “About a Boy” I will look at how Marcus as an individual was seen as weird and a loner because he chose not to conform and follow the social norms like everyone else. I will also draw on the “No man is an Island” theme by looking at how and why Will chose to lead an isolated life. My audience will be my peers and teachers and will be written in a formal, structured piece.
For the SAC I will be writing an persuasive piece on Prompt A '' To be true to yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great achievement''. I will be agreeing with this statement because as the world is changing people change in many ways and it I think its very difficult to stay true to yourself while the world is changing as we get older and older. I will be referring to the context '' Identity and Belonging'' and the movie '' About a Boy''.
I will be using an informal tone and my intended audience will be the general audience because this statement refers to everyone in many ways and has many ways that affects people. My contention will be '' You should always be true to your own identity and self even though the world is changing.
For my SAC in relation to the context "Identity and Belonging- No man is an Island", I have chosen to explore the prompt "Conformity destroys individuality". I am aiming to write a persuasive essay using formal language to discuss and examine the two main themes "conformity" and "belonging" by relating back to the visual text About a Boy. This piece of writing will be aimed at adolescence which conformity and individuality are contentious issues. The purpose of this essay is to inform adolescence that individuality is important and to be easily influenced and drawn in by surrounding peers can result to a loss of identity.
My essay will be written in third person with the statement of intention as the introduction, the body paragraphs in the form of TEEL and the conclusion which will sum up my ideas.
Throughout my piece of writing, I intend to persuade adolescences to try to maintain their individuality because it is easily lost in a world of ever-changing current affairs that can influence many young adults to behave and do things they necessarily would not do nowadays.
For my SAC on the context "Identity and Belonging- No man is an island". I have decided to do a persuasive essay on the prompt "To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement". i will be writing in the 1st person. The purpose is trying to persuade the reader to believe that being yourself and being true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement. I'll be agreeing with this prompt as it really is the best thing you can do for yourself in your life is being yourself. The audience will be the general peers but mostly teenagers who don't feel comfortable with themselves and try to change who they are to be excepted by peers.
My essay on 'Identity and Belonging, No man is an island' is going to be an expository piece on the prompt 'Conformity destorys indivudality'. I will be exploring this idea using texts such as 'About a Boy' where Marcus is an indivdual because he doesn't conform with the other students. 'Twins' poem aswell demonstrates a girl who is trying to break free from the twin thing with her sister and trying hard to be seen as an individual. The purpose of this piece will be to entertain and encourage others to be unique indivuduals, to be yourself completely and deter others from conforming. It will be written in formal language. I will be agreeing with the prompt. Also I will be defining conformity and pyschologist Asch Solomans experiment where he disproved his hypothesis as more people are going to conform in group situations. He said conformity is a great concern for younger generation. The audience will be for teachers, and people who struggle with their identity and have conformed with other people.
The poem “No Man is an Island” by John Donne talks about how not one person on earth can completely isolate themselves from the world, and that somehow or another we are all connected to each other. When he writes, “No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main,” he is relating this to the fact that all human beings are dependent on each other, and not one can survive without communication and dependence on others. Though we may drift away, which is when we become this “island” we always have to come back to the “mainland” because it is a neccessity in our lives. The poem is sending the message that we are all together, and all one – we are all the same. In line 10, he quotes “Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind.” This describes the fac t that as humans, because we are all connected, whenever one dies it always affects somebody else, because in the end we are all mankind and all in this world together and what may affect one of us, affects us all.
Statement of Intention. For the SAC, I intend to write about the prompt, “To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement.” I will be writing in agreement with the prompt and in the form of an expository essay, and write using the examples of the media, the external pressures and the text “About a Boy.” The language I use will be formal and it will be written towards the audience of my peers and fellow students. My contention will be formed with help from the context “Identity and Belonging” and of course the prompt.
my esssy for this friday my prompt on 'identity and belonging' which in relation to the film "about a boy" staring Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult. im have choose A:'to be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement'. from 'about a boy' i will have a look at Marcus lifestyle by the way he has been picked on at school and so on. then Will's lifestyle and drawing to the quote the character used in the movie "no man is an island". i will relate it on the booket we used last term with the piece of script out of the play 'snap-snap' by Richard Yaxley. in that play i pick out that the famous actress has been stalked and therefore invading he privaticy. My audience will be my teachers and peers which makes this a formal piece of writing.
just a quick question Ms Min is this contention fine for Individuality "Being part of a group is not a bad way to find one's identity but only by standing out from a group will truly make you happy"
Hi Jagesh. I can see what you are trying to say with your contention, and you are right in acknowledging that being a part of a group isnt always a negative thing, however it would be better to have a shorter, clearer contention which focuses on the idea of standing out. How about rewording it slightly to suggest that although it is not impossible to find a sense of identity when we are a part of a collective, true happiness comes when we are comfortable standing out from a group. Its a very minor change from what you have already written. I will ask though, does knowing who you are (having a personal identity) make you happy? If so, then what does it mean to have an identity? It is in this definition of 'identity' and how it 'truely makes you happy' you will hopefully come to a clear contention for your essay. I find it really interesting you have taken this path with the prompt. I look forward to reading your essay. Good luck and come see me if you have further questions.
My ‘Identity and Belonging’ essay I will be following the prompt "To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement." This essay will be an expository piece. I will be exploring the themes and issues raised in the film “powder” as well as Ben Cousins life experiences. I will be writing my expository essay in formal language with a variety of third person perspectives when exploring the two texts but I will also include first person perspective when I talk about my own personal view and situation that relates to my chosen prompt. The purpose of this piece will be to explain and show the consequences of added expectation and what it can do to people. My intended audience will be for people who have felt this struggle or have had to fight and can relate to the feeling or extra expectation.
my essay will be on the prompt 'conformity destroys individuality.' i will be supporting this prompt through a persuasive piece. i will be exploring texts such as 'Hey Hey it's Esther Blueburger' and how she conforms, and therefore looses her identity along the way. i will also be exploring 'About A Boy' and the character of Marcus and how he is a unique individual for not conforming. my audience will be for teens possibly struggling with this issue or wanting to find their identity, or even adults who have experienced this and can relate to it. the purpose of this piece will be to prove that conforming can lead to negative consequences.
For the sac i will be witing about, to be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement. It will be an expository essay in a formal manner, including themes from "About a Boy", powder and own personal life experiences. The purpose of my piece is to show of the effects on people who are true to themselves and those that conform to the way of others.
