  1. Statement of Explanation...

"To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement"

I am planning on writing a persuasive text in third person. My audience is particularly to teenagers and my teacher. The language features I am planning on using is a straight-forward, informative tone, keeping more neutral than emotional, while also incorporating a few rhetorical questions and strong word choices.
I am agreeing with the topic. My contention is that in this world you are more easily accepted in society if you conform, so to be true to yourself is very hard. It is far easier to be what society wants you to be, than to be true to yourself. Therefore, I think it is a big achievement to be yourself, because it is a lot harder than to conform. I would like to discuss 'About a Boy' and how being true to himself, impacted on Marcus. And also what it is to be yourself and then also to be fake, and the implications and pro’s of both.
And also why being true to yourself is a great achievement.

  2. Statement of Explanation

The topic that will be discussed throughout my piece of writing is “To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement” I am agreeing with the statement and it will be written in an expository form to explore several ideas relating to the topic such as identity and belonging it will also incorporate examples from the film ‘About a Boy ’. The tone that is consistently going to be used throughout this expository piece is a sincere yet serious voice. The audience that this specific written response is aimed towards is teenagers going through high school, who may be finding it difficult to accept themselves, express their opinions and may be struggling to find their identity and fit in amongst others. My contention is that society is unwilling to accept uniqueness and has a constant need to change individuals and mold them into a stereotype that is more socially acceptable and that to be true to oneself is an immense accomplishment as it is difficult to do so with so much pressure from the media and peers to conform.

  3. Statement of Intention:
For the SAC on the context “Identity and Belonging”, I have picked the prompt of ‘Conformity destroys individuality’. I am intending on presenting this essay in expository format, thus allowing me to explore all angles of the idea. Additionally, I am planning on writing this piece in the passive third-person for the most part (if not all).

What’s more, the tone I am intending on utilising for this piece will be somewhat neutral; arguing neither for nor against the prompt (in the spirit of expository essays). My intended audience for this SAC will essentially be those grading it (of course), but in addition, anybody studying the same context outcome (because I’ll be bluntly honest in suggesting that most people would not want to read a bunch of essays by choice).

My intention in this essay will be to create 3 body paragraphs. My first paragraph shall find relation to ideas reviewed in class (such as the poem by John Donne; it is arguable that whilst not relating directly to conformity, conformity is an integral component of ‘belonging’). The second will relate to our studied film text, “About a boy”, while I am strongly considering perhaps bringing back an element of first person into the third paragraph with an anecdote that shall aid in supporting my prior writing.

  4. In this piece of writing I am aiming to persuade the reader into seeing my point of view on the topic 'Conformity destroys individuality'. I am intending to aim this piece of writing to my teacher, which is going to be produced in a written essay form. I will be using anecdotes and using examples from the movie 'About a boy' to help provide the evidence I will need in my piece. The tone I will be using will be sincere and direct as well as incorporating persuasive language. I am disagreeing with the topic as my contention is that I personally don't believe conformity destroys individuality, theres more than one thing to conform to in life. Because of this no two people conform to exactly the same factors, which makes us all unique. The ideas I am going to be exploring in my text are firstly, examples of different types of sterotypes and how they conform with eachother in an attempt to be individuals. Secondly, role models; and how certain people look up to others, and the impact it can have on a person, and lastly, i'll be writing a personal recount, exploring the contention through my own personal experience.

  5. For my essay on "Identity and Belonging" I am going to use the prompt 'conformity destroys individuality' to compose an expository piece of writing. For this piece, the target audience will be teenagers, as peer pressure ties in with conformity. As teens feel the need to fit in somewhere or to be accepted, this is a topic that they can easily relate to and understand.

I intend to use a reletively nuetral tone in this piece to explore many arguments for and against the prompt, rather than to take one side and persuade the readers to agree with me. I may also use an anecdote to explain a point, argument or view that is being explored. My essay will be comprised of an introduction and a conclusion with three body paragraphs in between them. I will explore the ideas of how conformity can often be confused with coincidence and common interest, what conformity is and the different types of conformity and finally how conformity can create individuality in some respects, but also destroy it in other ways.

  6. Statement of Explanation

I have chosen to respond to task A: “To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement”. I do agree with the statement and will be using a persuasive writing style and bring up many ideas and statements to follow up my point of view. In composing this piece of writing I am aiming to capture the reader and persuade them into understanding and following my beliefs. This piece will be directed towards my English teach who has a mature understanding of the prompt and the background information on the related topic. With developing ideas I have drawn from the class film of “about a boy” and also personal views and knowledge. My piece will be broken down to main paragraphs displaying different examples of the prompt. The language I will be using in my piece includes persuasive strategies and try to extend on my level of vocabulary for this piece and I will be using these techniques to manipulate the reader.

  7. For the SAC on ‘Identity and Belonging’ I have chosen to use the prompt ‘’conformity destroys individuality’’. For this piece, my target audience will be the English staff at Cheltenham, as they have knowledge on the focus film ‘About a Boy’, in which I will be referencing throughout my essay. In composing this piece I am aiming to argue that the prompt is correct and provide reasons why conformity does destroy individuality.
I am intending on presenting this as an expository essay, allowing the topic to be exposed and looked at from different points of view. For the piece to be appropriate for my audience, I will write the essay in a formal manner, use relevant references to the film ‘About a Boy’ and follow TEEL.
My piece will be broken down into 3 body paragraphs displaying examples from relevant texts and films we have studied, including John Donne’s poem and About a Boy. I intend on using a neutral, straight forward and informative tone, providing references arguing towards the prompt. I’m also considering using rhetorical questions, descriptive language and personal experiences to further develop my argument. My piece will be written in third person.

  8. Statement of Intention

My persuasive essay will be based upon the prompt, “Conformity destroys individuality” and my contention will be that conformity does destroy individuality. I am planning on presenting my essay in third person and my intended audiences are my teacher and other teenagers. I am going to put forth a persuasive tone whilst using ideas from the poem, “No man is an Island” by John Donne which relates to the topic, “Identity and belonging” and the film, “About a boy.” My register will be formal with the use of persuasive techniques such as connotations and rhetorical questions to emphasise my point of view that conformity does destroy individuality.
My first paragraph will be based upon the ideas developed in class such as John Donne’s poem, “No man is an Island.” The second paragraph will be focused on the film, “About a boy” and my last paragraph will comprise of a personal anecdote that shall support my belief that conformity does destroy individuality.

  9. For the SAC that is based on 'Identity and Belonging' I chose the prompt 'To be true to yourself in a world that's constantly rying to make you something else is a great achievement'.

The form of thisb piece is an expository essay as I will explore my ideas on the topic in the form of an essay. My target audience is my peers and ny teacher therefore I have used a formal tone throughout my piece and simple vocabulary.

My opinion is that it is a great achievement to be true to yourself when the world is trying to make you someone else. My essay will have five paragraphs; an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. I will use the texts 'In Duty Bound' and 'Romeo and Juliet' and the films 'Bend it Like Beckham' and 'About a Boy' in order to show the many ways that people can be true to themselves when the world is trying to change them. I believe that this is a great achievement.

  10. I have chosen the prompt "Conformity destroys individuality" and I am writing it as an expository essay.
My target audience will by my teacher (obviously) and my peers. I will you a fairly relaxed tone whilst writing my essay.
My essay will explore both the positives and negatives of conformity and individuality, and explain why is it good to have a balance of both. I will use the film "About a Boy" to reference from, and also include some anecdotes of my own. I won’t favour one side more than the other, rather compare the two and critically analyse them.

I will try try to base my paragraphs on "About a boy" and how Marcus and Will demonstrate this in their own ways. I will also try to relate my paragraphs on things i have seen like intense peer pressure, religious views and the poem "No man is an Island".

  12. Statement of Intention

I am writing a persuasive response the topic “To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement “. I am agreeing with this statement and I am aiming this response at teenagers. It is written in informal language with an often sarcastic but forceful tone. I have included many references to the movie “About a Boy”, in particular the way Will tries to persuade Marcus to be ‘cool’. This relates to my contention which is being yourself is such a great achievement because of the everyday social pressures to conform. I have included many personal thoughts and with this I am trying to appeal to the readers emotional side. I want to persuade readers to believe that you will never be really happy unless you are true to yourself.

  13. Statement of Intention

For this SAC I have chosen to respond persuasively to the prompt "To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great achievement". My response will be targeted mainly at teenagers as I feel the majority will be able to relate in some way. I will incorporate persuasive language techniques such as anecdotes and rhetorical questions into my response, as well as drawing ideas from the film "About a Boy", well known figures and personal experiences to help appeal to the reader on an emotional level. My contention will state even though sometimes it’s easier to be conformed, people should stay true to themselves and their identity.

  14. Statement of explanation...

For my sac i have chosen to write persuasively in response to the topic "to be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to change you is a great achievement".i feel that this it greatly displayed in the film "about a boy" by marcus, will and marcus's mum. The way they act show's no regard to what others think of them because they are attempting to stay true to themselves. The poem "no man is an island" also displays this topic, showing that men should not be an "island", but more a formation making an archipelago. This translates to men that are "islands" that they should branch out and this will be discussed in my essay.

  15. I have chosen to write an expository piece on the topic, "To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to change you is a great achievement." I agree with this statement because as a teenager we are often trying to do the same things as our peers to fit in. In the movie, 'About a Boy', Will tries to make Marcus into something that he is not. Towards the end of the movie, Will is the one who learns the lesson that to stay true to yourself you have to believe in yourself and not what anyone else says or does. This is why my essay is pointed to teenagers. A lot of us don't try and be ourselves, we try to do what everyone else does to fit in which is bad because in the end we are not happy and don't achieve what we really want.
