  2. I wonder when, how, and by whom we are marked with that 'spot'?

  3. Jeremy happens to be that character from the movie 'Powder' that seems to be left out of society because everyone has been staring at him knowing how strange he is. But he did get along with that girl meaning this is like the person who has communicated very well. People that are the same or different, we all lived in one big community.

  4. 'Powder' relates to 'No Man Is An Island' in a few ways. Firstly, it is discussing all living things being connected, rather than being separate. Secondly, it discusses whether or not this is a negative or a positive thing. The man in 'Powder', seems to believe that the people believing that they are separate and/or 'alone' are incorrect, and that this is a highly negative thing, because we are all "a part of absolutely everyone" and therefore inter-connected. I believe that we may all be a part of one another, in some way or form (we all live on the same planet, strive to make a living and socialise in some way, for example, making us all similar in some of our basic needs) but we are all still able to live life isolated if we wanted to. It seems that while we are all 'connected', our connection to one another is weak and easily breakable. Nevertheless, the man in 'Powder' is clearly stating that although most humans feel "separate" no matter how far apart we are from one another; we are all a part of one another. Although this may be true I also think that it is slightly exaggerated and hard to believe that I may very well be part of a tree, for example, or even part of another human being who lives half way across the world, who is completely different to me in almost every way, at least in the literal sense. I suppose it depends on which way the man in ‘Powder’ was looking at it (literal or non-literal).

  5. Almost immediately, I find a similarity between Jeremy and John Donne in their reflections upon humanity. In their respective reflections, they both make the point that all things are ‘connected’.

Notably, Jeremy states that we are “part of absolutely everything and everyone”. In the same fashion as I disagreed with Donne’s notion of all people being connected, I once more beg to differ. With Jeremy’s statement, there is no room for misinterpretation or alternative viewpoints, as his point is incredibly literal (as can be observed through conversation held between the 2 characters).

To claim that we are part of everyone is an exaggerated and ludicrous statement. I can understand that we are connected to many people; those with which we associate in our day-to-day, and even those with whom we interact on a once-off basis. Even in this case, however, it is impossible to be connected to all people.

    ...let alone ‘things’.

  6. In response to the clip from 'Powder'
The ideas presented in this short clip, shares similarities to the ideas in John Donne's poem, but the ideas Jeremy brings up are a little more exaggerated than John Donne's poem. Donne stated that we are like a group of islands that are connected but separated by bodies of water, whereas Jeremy claims that we're all a part of everyone and everything... The way I interpret it, I personally think that Donne's poem bears a more realistic statement that we're not a part of everything, but we're connected in some way. Thats not to say we're all connected in some way, as in, everyone in the world. As the lady in the clip brought up "You're telling me that I'm a part of some fisherman in Italy in an ocean I've never even heard of?" Its true that we're not all entirely 'connected' and as Steven brought up, it's ludicrous to claim that we are all a part of every one and every thing. But I believe that we are connected to people and things that we have influenced, even if some connections aren't as strong as others, we're connected to our family, our friends, our school, our community and so on. Whatever or whoever we influence or come into contact with, I believe we're connected to.

  7. In response to the clip Powder, I agree we are connected with other people as people are pretty much the same wherever they come from, in this clip the girl refers to a fisherman in Italy and she does not believe how she could connect to him. But in reality, the fisherman probably also has a family who cares for him and friends and they may share the same interests. Recently, I met my cousins from America who I did not know and we connected, not only because we are family but we had similar interests in sports. So teenagers around the world even though we don't know each other can connect through things they like so people are very alike, where ever they come from.

  8. In response to text 2 “Powder”
In regards to text 2 I personally believe that Jeremy’s statement in the clip “Powder” “we are part of absolutely everything and everyone” is to a great extent overemphasized as I do not believe that human being is part of everything and everyone or that a human being can be “part of some fisherman in Italy in an ocean” or as Rachel mentioned part of a tree I think to make a statement such as that is absurd. I do however believe that human beings are connected to people to some extent as illustrated in John Donne’s poem as we all have similar connections in our lives as every individual has friend’s and family and certain people they can relate to leaving them connected to one another.

  9. In response to the video, "Powder", Jeremy's belief that everyone and everything are connected to one another in some way seems to be a bit exaggerated. Jeremy states that no one is isolated or separated from one another.
As many others have mentioned, it does seem to be a bit exaggerated as compared to John Donne's poem. We cannot be connected to 'absolutely everything and everyone' but we do have connections to the people we know such as family and friends and our community. The lady in the video found it absurd that she's related to the 'tree' and even 'some fisherman in Italy on some ocean.' I personally do not believe that we are a part of everything and everyone but I do believe that we have certain connections to the people around us and the people we influence.

  10. In response to the visual text "Powder", Jeremy demonstrates isolation at the beginning of the clip as he walks through the carnival and the people surrounding him looks at him because he appears "different". However, despite the isolation he receives, he still suggests that everyone is "absolutely apart of everyone and everything". This is a more solid approach in relation to the context "Identity and belonging" in contrast to the John Donne poem. However, both texts imply the same idea, that we as "individuals" are all connected somehow.
I believe that we individuals share many connects between others and our surroundings, however we are not connected to "everything and everyone" like Jeremy stated. Being individuals, it is impossible to share so many relations because if we did, we would not be entirely individuals ourselves.
